Chapter 870: Human faced spider

Kevin’s pupils shrank. He had personally tasted Max’s strength before and knew how terrifying that black flaming sword could be. Without hesitation, he barked to the thin young man beside him, “Jamie! Stop him! I’ll grab the Soul-Nourishing Grass!”

Jamie’s eyes flickered with hesitation. He had seen Max fight and knew he wasn’t simple, but pride clouded his judgment. A peak Master Rank? Against a 3rd level Legend Rank like him? Impossible that he could lose. “Go! I’ll handle him!” Jamie shouted, bracing himself as he lunged toward Max, weapon raised high.

The instant he clashed with Max, Jamie felt it—a strange, devouring force embedded within the flaming slash, sapping his strength, dulling his techniques, slowing his movements as though his limbs had been shackled. His eyes widened in sudden fear.

“Not good—!” he barely had time to mutter.

Max’s strike came crashing down like a mountain. The Blue Dragon Sword ripped through Jamie’s defenses with brutal ease, black flames biting into his body as pain tore through him. His scream echoed in the cave as blood spurted from his lips and he was blasted backward like a ragdoll.

Before he even touched the ground, fate struck again—the colossal golden sword above finally descended with a deafening roar, smashing into his chest with an impact that made the cave quake. His internal organs twisted painfully from the blow, another mouthful of blood spraying into the air as his body flew back, spinning uncontrollably before slamming into the stone wall like a broken doll.

Jamie’s eyes rolled back, his body twitching as he gasped for breath, his expression locked between shock and disbelief. One clash. That was all it took for Max to crush him.

“Jamie!?”

The shrill cry ripped out of Senior Sister Nell’s throat as her eyes darted toward the broken, bloodied body of the thin young man who had been struck down by Max moments earlier. Rage and disbelief surged within her, but she couldn’t take a step toward Max because the Human-Faced Spider King—its eyes blazing with savage fury after seeing its eggs stolen—came at her like a living nightmare.

The beast’s eight remaining legs slammed into the ground, shattering stone and sending debris flying as its venomous fangs snapped inches from her face. Even with her Red Python wrapping itself around the monstrous spider and trying to restrain it, she found herself locked into a deadly battle, unable to escape.

Kevin, on the other hand, wasn’t as surprised by Jamie’s fall. He had experienced firsthand how terrifying Max’s sword could be and knew this outcome wasn’t impossible.

But still, watching one of his own people fall so quickly put a grim, icy edge to his expression. His hands clenched into fists, and veins bulged across his temples as hatred burned hotter than ever.

Before Kevin could react further, Max was already on him again. The Blue Dragon Sword in Max’s hand glowed ominously, black flames twisting around it, and the killing intent radiating from him was like a suffocating storm rolling in from the abyss.

“Damn it!” Kevin roared, his face twisting into something feral and savage. His arms crossed tightly before his chest, and from his body surged a blinding black light. Dark runes spun in the air and knitted together into a massive black seal that seemed to drag the surrounding yin energy into itself, forming a blast of suffocating power.

The seal shot forward with a force that made the air hum and collapse in its wake, its violent aura sending waves across the cavern.

Max’s eyes narrowed at the sheer intensity of the energy. He could feel it even before impact—it was heavier, sharper, and far deadlier than before. His pupils shrank slightly as he murmured under his breath, “Seventh level…? He’s at the seventh level of Legend Rank now?”

For a split second, shock rippled through Max’s chest. Kevin had not only survived the gray shadow incident that should have ended him but had also advanced two entire levels. That kind of leap didn’t happen by luck alone—he must have stumbled upon an opportunity, a fortuitous encounter that pushed his strength higher.

From a distance, Nell noticed this change too, and a wild grin split her lips even as she danced around the strikes of the Human-Faced Spider King. “Junior Brother Kevin, you’ve advanced to the seventh level of Legend Rank? Excellent! Hold him there, stall Max! I’ll kill this Human-Faced Spider King and then deal with him together!”

Kevin’s face tightened into a grin at those words. A plan, a chance to kill Max, and now Senior Sister Nell backing him—it was enough to ignite hope in his heart. He straightened his posture, his black seal pulsing with even greater ferocity as he prepared to clash head-on with Max.

Max’s face, however, darkened. His grip on the Blue Dragon Sword tightened until the leather hilt creaked, and black flames surged up like the wings of a demonic dragon. His instincts screamed that this fight was spiraling into something he didn’t want dragged out. He was about to activate Magic Sword Excalibur, summon the massive golden sword again, and end Kevin in one strike when—

“BANG!”

The deafening crack of breaking bone echoed through the cavern. Max, Kevin, and Nell all froze for a fraction of a second as their eyes darted toward the source.

The Human-Faced Spider King, in a frenzy, had snapped three of its own legs, tearing itself apart to escape the coils of the Red Python. Black blood sprayed through the air, hissing as it struck stone, and with an ear-splitting screech, the beast lunged forward in a bloody mist. Its eight remaining eyes burned with hatred and madness as it hurtled directly toward Senior Sister Nell.

Her expression, moments ago full of pride and confidence, turned to one of utter shock and fear. She had expected the Human-Faced Spider King to continue its desperate defensive struggle, but instead, it had sacrificed part of its body to go on an all-out offensive—and she was its target.

The entire battlefield shifted in an instant. The Red Python hissed in confusion, Kevin froze for a breath, and even Max blinked, momentarily thrown off. The Spider King’s murderous intent flooded the cavern, cold and primal, as if the cave itself was about to collapse from its rage.
