Chapter 886: Futile Efforts
Chapter 886: Futile Efforts
At the same time, Rick, gritting his teeth against the pressure of the dragon’s poisonous aura, thrust out his spear with all his strength. Spiritual power surged from his core and poured into the weapon, making it glow faintly as he channeled every bit of energy he could muster.
With a sharp whistle, the spear shot out like a bolt fired from a massive crossbow, cutting through the air in a straight and deadly line toward one of the dragon’s heads.
But the three-headed black dragon was far stronger and faster than either Rick or Devon had anticipated. With a single, violent coil of its heads, it exhaled another wave of thick, rolling poisonous gas. The venomous mist struck the ochre earthen tablet Devon had conjured earlier, shattering it into crumbling pieces before it even finished solidifying.
The poison then swirled further outward, enveloping the flying spear and knocking it back with such force that it spiraled uncontrollably before embedding itself into a distant tree trunk with a deep metallic thunk.
A guttural, ear-splitting roar erupted from all three of the dragon’s heads as it suddenly lunged out of the pool, its massive body cutting through the water like a blade. Its obsidian scales gleamed with a terrifying luster under the faint light, and as it surged forward, its powerful tail whipped upward from the pool like a living beam of black light.
The sheer size of the tail dwarfed the experts, and the sound it made as it cut through the air was like the crack of a giant whip tearing through the void.
Two deafening bang-bang impacts followed immediately after, as the tail slammed into Devon and Rick with bone-shattering force. The pair had barely any time to react before they were flung away like rag dolls, their protective spiritual shields cracking under the enormous impact. They crashed heavily into the ground, rolling several times before coming to a halt.
Blood sprayed from their mouths in great gouts, painting the ground beneath them crimson as their bodies trembled from the impact.
But neither man dared to stay down. They ignored their internal injuries, forcing themselves to roll over and scramble backward in a desperate retreat. For a moment, the looming shadow of the three-headed dragon enveloped them, its eyes flashing with a cold, predatory gleam.
One wrong move, one second too slow, and they would be devoured whole just like their junior brothers.
Fortunately, at that very moment, Arnold, who had quickly assessed the situation, rushed to the far side of the pool, deliberately making an exaggerated gesture as if to grab the Pure Yang Flowers. The three-headed black dragon’s eyes immediately shifted, fury twisting its three jaws as it turned away from Devon and Rick.
With a thunderous roar, it lunged back toward the pool, coiling protectively around the flowers it considered its own, its three heads poised like an unyielding wall of death to guard them.
Devon and Rick finally allowed themselves to stop running, their faces pale and drenched with cold sweat. They looked at each other, their eyes both wide with lingering fear, and then glanced at Arnold with an expression of genuine gratitude. Without his quick thinking, both of them would likely have ended up as nothing more than food for the beast.
Arnold rushed over to them, concern etched across his face. “Senior Brother Devon, Senior Brother Rick, how are you?” he asked, his tone tight but sincere.
Devon coughed slightly, wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth, and forced a smile. “We’re fine… but…” His voice faltered as the weight of what had just happened settled in.
Rick, still panting, lowered his head. “It’s a pity about Junior Brother Dustin and Junior Brother Corey… alas.” His voice was heavy, tinged with guilt and sadness.
Both men quickly pulled out healing pills from their robes and swallowed them, forcing their battered bodies to begin their recovery. Yet even as the medicinal energy began to spread through their meridians, their minds returned to the brutal scene they had just witnessed—Dustin swallowed whole, his scream cut off in an instant, his life gone in a heartbeat.
The images replayed mercilessly in their minds, filling them with self-blame and regret. Devon let out a long sigh, his expression dark, while Rick’s fists clenched until his knuckles turned white. The excitement of seeking treasure had been brutally replaced by the bitter reality of loss and helplessness.
“Two senior brothers, you have already done your best,” Arnold said softly, his tone attempting to comfort them even as his own expression carried the weight of what had just happened.
Devon clenched his jaw tightly, silence hanging for a brief moment before his eyes hardened, a glint of murderous resolve flashing within them. “No,” he said in a low but firm voice, “we must avenge Junior Brother Dustin.”
Rick, who had been quietly suppressing his emotions, nodded sharply in agreement. “Yes, we must kill this beast.” His voice trembled slightly with anger as his gaze locked onto the three-headed black dragon still coiled around the pool like a dark sentinel.
Both men stared at the beast with fierce eyes, their knuckles white from clenching their weapons, their minds already clouded by vengeance.
Arnold, however, remained calm, his sharp mind quickly cutting through their emotional impulse. His eyes lingered on the three-headed black dragon, its three massive heads floating just above the water, cold eyes glaring back at them with undisguised hostility.
“These three-headed black dragons are of a different species,” Arnold said solemnly, “and their strength has already reached the peak of the Legend Rank. They are not ordinary guardian beasts. Even with all three of us together, we are no match for it. If we truly wish to avenge Junior Brothers Dustin and Corey, I’m afraid we’ll have to contact other senior brothers to come.”
Devon and Rick exchanged glances, their heavy breathing slowly calming as Arnold’s logic sank in. After a pause, Arnold continued, “I have already sent word to Senior Brother Kyle. Why don’t we wait for him here? If we want revenge, it must be done properly, not recklessly.”
